What is a Repeat Prescription?
If your doctor thinks it appropriate you may obtain medicines on a repeat prescription without having to see him/her; they are issued at the doctors discretion and are normally for patients on long-term treatment. However, you will be asked to attend for a review if your condition needs checking. Your medication will also need checking to ensure it is still having the desired effect and no changes to dose or type of medication are required. The date of when a medication review is due is shown on the bottom right hand side of your prescription (the prescription counterfoil).
Medication will NOT automatically be issued where 'Medication Reviews' are out of date. Please check the date on your prescription to ensure supplies of your medication are not delayed.
How much does a prescription cost?
From 1 April 2019 the cost is £9.65 per item or £31.25 for a 3 month pre payment certificate/£104 for a 12 month pre payment certificate
Prescriptions are FREE if you are:
- Aged 60 years or over
- Under 16 years of age
- Are aged 16,17 or 18 years and in full time education
Prescriptions are FREE if you have
- Had a baby in the last 12 months and have a valid certificate or you are currently pregnant
- A valid war pension exemption certificate
- A listed medical condition (see below) AND have a valid certificate
- A permanent fistula requiring dressing
- Forms of hypoadrenalism such as Addison’s Disease
- Diabetes insipidus
- Diabetes mellitus (except where treatment is by diet alone)
- Hypoparathyroidism
- Myasthenia gravis
- Myxoedema
- Epilepsy, requiring regular anti epilepsy medication
- If, because of a permanent disability, you cannot leave home without help
- A current pre- payment certificate
- Been prescribed free of charge contraceptives
Prescriptions are FREE if you:
- Are on income support
- Receive income based Jobseekers Allowance
- Got a Pension Credit Guarantee Credit
- Named on a valid NHS Tax Credit Exemption Certificate Sept 2007
Quantity of Medication Prescribed
In line with North Yorkshire guidance we issue patients with a 28 day supply of medication. There are a few exceptions to this rule, these tend to be for medication such as the oral contraceptive or HRT.
How do I order a prescription?
- Use the internet to order your prescription via or OnLine/Patient Facing service (see below)
- Post the request slip to us - If you wish us to return your prescription please remember to enclose a stamped self addressed envelope
- Fax your request slip to us
- Use the services provided by local pharmacies - The majority of pharmacies now collect and deliver prescriptions. If you wish to use the services of a pharmacy, this must be arranged with the pharmacy concerned.
We do NOT accept requests over the telephone
When will my prescription be ready for collection?
We require 48 hours or 2 working days notice. For example requests made on a Monday will either be ready for collection on Wednesday after 2.00 pm or submitted electronically to a pharmacy within the same timeframe.
Individual pharmacies should be contacted regarding when medication issued electronically will be available for collection.
Can my prescription be sent electronically to a pharmacy of my choice?
We ask that if you use our main site in Selby you tell us which pharmacy you would like to use, we can send your prescription by this method. Routine requests will be authorised & sent electronically within 2 working days of request. Patients should always check with their nominated pharmacy how long it will be from them receiving the request from us before medication will be available for collection.
Dispensing Medicines
We have provision to dispense to the majority of patients who attend our branch surgeries. The Health Service Regulations on this matter are very strict and this service can only be offered to those patients who register as dispensing when they join the practice or when they move house. We regret that the NHS rules prevent us dispensing medicines to patients who do not live in an area permitted by the Health Authority. If you live outside these areas you will not be given medicines at branch surgeries.
Our branch surgeries stock those medicines that we normally prescribe, but occasionally we may not have an item in stock. We can usually get these within 48 hours; if the need is more immediate, or if you wish, you can be given a prescription that you can take to the pharmacy. Medication will NOT be handed over unless payment in full is received
What happens if you are going abroad?
- If you are going abroad for 3 months or less we will give you a ‘one off’ supply of up to 3x 28-day supply to cover this period
- If you spend 6 months abroad in any 12 month period we will give you 1 x 28 day supply . This is enough to last you until you can make arrangement to get further supplies at your destination by, registering with a doctor in the county you are visiting or buying the medication from a pharmacy while you are away
- If you are out of the country for more than 6 months under current NHS guidelines we are obliged to de-register you from our list.
