What is a Repeat Prescription?

If your doctor thinks it appropriate you may obtain medicines on a repeat prescription without having to see him/her; they are issued at the doctors discretion and are normally for patients on long-term treatment. However, you will be asked to attend for a review if your condition needs checking. Your medication will also need checking to ensure it is still having the desired effect and no changes to dose or type of medication are required. The date of when a medication review is due is shown on the bottom right hand side of your prescription (the prescription counterfoil).

Medication will NOT automatically be issued where 'Medication Reviews' are out of date. Please check the date on your prescription to ensure supplies of your medication are not delayed.

Quantity of Medication Prescribed

In line with North Yorkshire & York PCT's guidance, our standard is to issue patients with a 28 day supply of medication. There are a few exceptions to this rule, these tend to be for medication such as the oral contraceptive or HRT.

How do I order a prescription?

• Use the internet to order your prescription 'On Line'.
• In person at the surgery, leave yourrequest in the Repeat Prescription Box - Requests made before 10.30 am will be available for collection after 2.00 pm the following day. 
• Post the request slip to us - If you wish us to return your prescription please remember to enclose a stamped self addressed envelope.
• Fax your request slip to us
• Use the services provided by local pharmacies. The majority of pharmacies now collect and deliver prescriptions. If you wish to use the services of a pharmacy, this must be arranged with the pharmacy concerned.

When will my prescription be ready for collection?

If you attend our main site in Selby requests made before 10.30 am will be available for collection after 2.00 pm the following day. If you order on a Friday your prescription will be ready after 2.00 pm the following Monday. If you are registered at one of our branch surgeries and have your medication dispensed we require 2 working days notice.

How much does a prescription cost?

From 1 April 2011 the NHS prescription charge is £7.40 for each medicine or appliance.

Pre-Payment certificates (PPC's) may save you money, especially if you take two or more items of medication per month. These cost £29.10 for 3 months or £104.00 for 12 months. Ask for form FP95 at the Post Office.

Dispensing Medicines

We have provision to dispense to the majority of patients who attend our branch surgeries. The Health Service Regulations on this matter are very strict and this service can only be offered to those patients who register as dispensing when they join the practice or when they move house. We regret that the NHS rules prevent us dispensing medicines to patients who do not live in an area permitted by the Health Authority. If you live outside these areas you will not be given medicines at branch surgeries.

Our branch surgeries stock those medicines that we normally prescribe, but occasionally we may not have an item in stock. We can usually get these within 48 hours; if the need is more immediate, or if you wish, you can be given a prescription that you can take to the pharmacy. Medication will NOT be handed over unless payment in full is received

What happens if you are going abroad?

If you are going abroad for 3 months or less w e will give you a ‘one off’ supply of up to 3x 28-day supply to cover this period

If you spend 6 months abroad in any 12 month period we will give you 1 x 28 day supply . This is enough to last you until you can make arrangement to get further supplies at your destination by, registering with a doctor in the county you are visiting or buying the medication from a pharmacy while you are away

If you are out of the country for more than 6 months under current NHS guidelines we are obliged to de-register you from our list.
